Acknowledging the need for change, Tory decided to go alcohol-free and embraced a new ally in her quest for well-being: the gym. Joining BFT, she discovered a supportive community that not only aided her recovery but also contributed to a significant positive shift in her life.
Reflecting on the impact, the 40-year-old Mayor shared, "Since then, my life has changed quite a bit. I have more energy, I'm a lot happier." The gym, she emphasized, had become a refuge where she could be herself and find solace during stressful times.
Research from the UK supported Tory's experience, revealing that 78% of gym-goers felt exercising positively influenced their mental well-being. Gill Hood, CEO of Care NZ, an addiction support service in Wellington, emphasized the evidence supporting the positive effects of physical exercise on addiction recovery. Exercise, particularly going to the gym, releases endorphins, creating a feel-good sensation.
Despite the looming challenges facing Wellington – leaky infrastructure and a sometimes dysfunctional council – Mayor Whanau remained resolute. Confident in her ability to bear the weight of responsibility, she declared, "This is gonna be a great year of delivery. I'm ready, I'm here to listen, I'm feeling strong, I'm feeling healthy, and I'm genuinely excited about my year as Mayor."
