Victoria's Urgent Warning: Flesh-Eating Ulcer Surge

Victoria's Urgent Warning: Flesh-Eating Ulcer Surge

Last year in Victoria, health folks spotted a lot more cases of these nasty flesh-eating ulcers – like 363 of them! Most weren't too bad, but still, these ulcers caused by bacteria can mess up your skin big time, with lumps, swelling, and sometimes real bad pain.

The health squad said, if you get these ulcers, they usually can fix you up with antibiotics, but catching it early is super important because these ulcers just keep on growing. Acting health minister Ingrid Stitt warned everyone, especially in coastal hangouts, to be careful in the warmer months.

She said, "Mosquitoes love this warm weather, so grab some bug spray with Deet, cover up outside, and keep clean – wash those scratches and cuts." The health peeps also suggest putting screens on your windows to keep mosquitoes out and avoiding their favorite hangout times like dawn and dusk.

The first sign of trouble is usually a lump on your skin that doesn't hurt much. Then, this slow infection digs into your skin, muscles, and pops out as a nasty ulcer. It used to be rare, but now it's not just coastal – places like Geelong and inner Melbourne are on the hit list since 2019.

Some smart science folks like Prof Tim Stinear figured out that mosquitoes and possums are part of the problem.Possums carry the bacteria, and mosquitoes spread it around. They found this out with a simple PCR test.

Tim said, "It's a tricky infection – takes about four to five months to show up, making it tough for folks to know where they caught it." The number of cases in Victoria is jumping up each year, hitting between 200 and 340 cases since 2017. So, cover up, use bug spray, and stay safe out there!
